Since the disappearance of her father, Evelyn has been raised and taught magic by her mentor Klara, a quiet woman whose actions speak louder than her words.  When the old woman realizes that an unknown ailment afflicting children in their lakefront logging town may have a sinister cause, she reluctantly allows a few trustworthy friends to help them find the source.  

What follows takes them from subterranean ruins to windswept mountains, uncovering not only present dangers, but a complicated past.  Bonding through raucous revelry, the group of friends is inherently compassionate, eager to help and learn from each other.  Every skill they have, from sorcery to detailed note taking, is needed if they want to survive what is to come – a perfect storm of human greed and unthinkable monstrosities.
